Past Lifetimes.

20170520_090324

I’m in work today, and it’s been a very nasty day for some reason.

This time, instead of bothering you with one of my rants, I’ll publish one old draft.

It’s nice to get lost in speculations, sometimes, in particular when you think the bad luck decided to give your hard time.

Without going into religious matter or in philosophical details, mostly because I’m not knowledgeable enough in those fields, there is a concept I find intriguing and that I think about from time to time: previous lifetimes.

I know that for some people this is a serious matter and maybe it could be even considered a kind of science on some point of view. I promise you my intent is to play with my imagination and I intend no offence to anyone.

The truth is that from time to time I linger on the idea and wonder who I might have been before, what life could I have lived.

I think these thoughts are extremely funny to play with and interesting at the same time. For example, my love of ships and pirates, the excitement and almost nostalgic pang I feel when I set my feet on a ship, ferry or whatever goes on water makes me think I might have been a sailor or a pirate in one of my previous lifetimes.

Also, my curiosity, my love and the push I feel towards Japan might be signs of a previous lifetime in Japan or so I want to believe.

As far as I know there are a few people out there who are able to read your previous lifetime.

Sometimes I think I’d love to let one of them do it with me in order to check whether I was right or not.

However, the thing I love most is to work with my imagination, so I’ll take this post and the following ones – because you know there will be others, don’t you –  as writing exercise and imagination stretching.

First of all, how did I come up with the idea? Or better, this posts idea?

A few months ago, I created a chat where I gathered different people, important for me in different ways. We’re all a bit weird, all of us, but good hearted people. We are, however, so different, that I’d never thought possible to have all  of them chatting together, but we have so much fun daily, that I couldn’t do without them now.

I think I’m lucky to have them all. They’re brilliant, funny, weird and trustworthy.

The chat, other than myself, includes my favorite cousin, La, my best friend I met during university years, Mi, my two friends, Chi, I know since the crèche period and Lu, I met in middle high school.

There should be also Ra, but I think she’s just a silent reader! She’s great too, but I think we scared her!

Since it seems that destiny lately is enjoying way too much teasing each and every one of us, in a way or the other, we thought that in our previous lifetimes we must have been very, very mean.

To this element, I might add a notion I received once, according to which the people you meet in this lifetime are souls you’ve met for sure in previous lifetimes. Maybe the relationship was different but still the souls had met before!

It’s this combination that triggered my imagination.

So, now you know where the whole thinking of my following posts comes from.

Stay tuned to learn where I’ve imagined my soul go across the eras and centuries and years.

What do you think about it? Where do you think you come from? What’s your soul travel?

Tell me in the comments below!

I’d love to be like her!

Maybe one of the most interesting part of being a writer or at least an aspiring writer is getting the ability to live someone else’s life.

You can live through your writing the life of someone similar to you or someone totally different, or someone who you would like to be, it doesn’t really matter.

As for me the characters I love more and I enjoy more to write about are those whose lives I would like to live or the ones I’d never dare to live, like the villains.

It’s not a secret I’m a bit boring and I live a very anonymous life. However, giving a hint of my character to my fictional creations, I can write scenes where I live fully, I dare, I fight, I ride horses, I find a dragon, I use magic and so on…

Likewise, when I read a book or I watch a film or a TV show, when I see a character I like, I start to think how she’s so much better compared to me and how much I would like to be more like her.

True is that, if you take this awe and admiration as push to improve yourself, it might be useful as well.

Following I decided to make a list of fictional characters – it doesn’t matter if from books, films, TV shows, manga or anime – whom I’d love to be alike, at least for a piece of their behavior or attitude!

Katniss Everdeen from Hunger Games: I’d love her strength, her practical expertise and her ability to land on her feet after a fall.

Hermione Granger from Harry Potter series: I love her knowledge, her ability to remember so many things after reading them only once.

Sara Lance from Arrow universe: I love her strength and commitment. She’s just cool.

Claire Randall Fraser from Outlander: I’d love to have her spirt of adaptation and her ability to heal won’t hurt either.

Lagertha from Vikings: She’s strong, she’s a warrior and only a greater good can convince her to come to a compromise.

Charlie from Supernatural: she’s smart and nerdy, bust she’s brave as well, sometimes pushing herself over her limits.

Mrs. Errol, mother of Little lord Fauntleroy: she’s a great mother and a great woman. I wish I could be like her.

Molly Weasley from Harry Potter series: she’s a great mother too. I might identify a couple of traits with her as she worries about everybody and caring for them; but at the same time, she’s strong and brave and daring. She can endure whatever pain and offence, but if you’re touching the family, you’re in deep trouble.

Robin from One Piece: she’s a pirate, the one kind I love most – which is the villain with a big heart – but she’s extremely cultured, brave and strong.

I think that’s it, there might be more, but I’m still on time for a later update!

Actually, writing down the names I realized I have a pattern.

I’d basically love to be braver, stronger, a better mother and have a wider culture.

What I can promise you is that I’ll try my best to be braver, stronger and a better mother. Not sure of what the result will be, but still I’ll do it!

How about you, my dear readers?

Is there anybody you’re admiring so much that you would like to be more like her or him?

Let me know in the comments below!

Thank you, thanks a lot!

I was writing a totally different post this week, but something happened two days ago that made me change my mind.

I wrote the draft of this post on the train back home because I didn’t want to let go the nice feeling. This explains the timing!

A few days ago, during a meeting, I had a brief chat with one colleague in work. She’s from another department so that was the longest chat I’ve had with her since I’ve started to work here. Honestly we’re so many in the office that is hard to know everybody.

During the chat I mentioned the fact I write in this little blog of mine and she asked me the link.

To be brutally honest I thought it was the usual “send me the link I’ll have a look at it!” I’m usually told when I’m asked the address of my blog.

I know that I can be very needy of a feedback once I give the address to someone, but I learned that seldom people really read my pages with attention.

You can imagine my big surprise when I met her that evening and she told me that not only she had read the blog but she also liked it! I was so surprised and happy!

I’m still not good in accepting compliments from people and I still felt a tad embarrassed but it was pleasant to hear such comments.

I could really tell that he spent some time on my blog and I’m so grateful for that.

Seldom I felt this way, only after a few feedbacks, but it was useful! Useful because it reminds me why I’m writing and how I would like my readers would react reading my words.

It’s true what they say: even if it’s only one person reading your stuff, you should write for that one person. And it is damn true!

I should well remember it in a period like the present one, when I often feel a bit tired and disheartened for the lack of time.

In conclusion, I want to say that I made this big explosion of words in order to tell her: thanks Kate! Thanks a lot!

And you, my dear readers, I guess you should thank her too…she saved you for a much creepier post! I might save it for Halloween week!

Writing log- September

notebooks-blog

If you hadn’t seen the reading log post for a while, I bet you don’t even remember when it was the last time I posted something about my writing progresses!

So I’d say it’s about time! This post was really overdue!

If I think this way, I realize that I managed to be a shame even as aspiring writer, other than as mum and generally speaking as human being!

I opened this blog mainly to speak about writing and not being able to write more often about writing seems a bit silly.

However, let’s see whether I’ll manage to avoid a too long rant and keep going with the update on my writing status!

If you thought I’m doing a big mess with books, reading my previous post, you can easily guess I’m doing the same with writing.

And you’d be right!

I have so many notebooks, pieces of paper, apps on writing, drives connected to my emails, files on my computer and laptop, that I really have a huge mess going on.

In other words, I don’t know what is where!

Despite that, in the attempt to give a tidy up of this endless sea of bytes and paper I narrowed down to four, at lease for the moment, the number of notebooks that I always have at hand.

Here you have them in the pictures!

From the left:

Orange notebook – In here I’m jotting down the elements of the new project, the urban fantasy about hunters. I’m putting notes of my researches, notes on the world building, notes about the plots and the characters.

Sheep notebook – In this one I’m trying to tidy up and give a more or less definitive form to the plots about my high fantasy world. Each plot is followed or is going to be followed by the list of characters, maps and main information about the world or the particular nation.

Gray notebook – It’s where I’m writing the actual book. A part from the fact that I had too many files on the computer, I realized that I couldn’t stay in front of the screen too long anymore. As I’m working in front of a computer now, I barely manage to update this blog, so in order to keep writing I’m using pen and paper…old style!

It seems that it’s working at the moment, let’s keep the fingers crossed!

I’ll curse myself for sure when I’ll have to pass all the writing into the computer – eventually I’ll have to – but for the moment it’s important to move on!

Small notebook – As you might read on the cover, this one is the notebook where I write the ideas I have for the blog. I usually bring it with me at all the times, everywhere, so I won’t lose any idea anymore.

Of course this means that also weird dreams and ideas for my books are going in there, but at least I know where they are…at least for now.

Once these notebooks will be finished and I’ll have to start a new one, I wonder whether I’ll be able to find them a place in where I’ll always be able to find them or they’ll get lost as the previous ones.

It might seem that I treat them like I didn’t care, but it’s not so. I’m just messy.

So, aspiring writers out there, can you give me an advice on how to tidy up the mess or sort the situation?

How do you do?

How do you organize your writing?

How do you manage not to lose your stuff?

Please, please, please write to me in the comments below!

Those, at least, won’t get lost!

Visiting the Amerigo Vespucci sailing ship!

One of my passions, a part from writing and fantasy, are ships and pirates!

Sometimes I think that an awful lot of my posts begin with “one of my passions”, and maybe this could be the reason why I find hard job to gather the time to second and nurture them…they’re simply too many.

I know I should concentrate on one at time, but it’s kind of difficult to me.

But that’s me, right? Unless I decide to change completely my brain and way of thinking, I guess I’ll have to figure out a way to do so!

Vespucci 2

So where was I? Oh yeah, Amerigo Vespucci is an 83 meters long sailing ship the marine cadets of Livorno use at the end of every first year of academy. They go on a 3 months training trip and, from what I learned, I can tell you that their training it’s pretty hard, both physically and mentally.

I saw it docked near my new office.

It’s not unusual seeing tall ships docked near there, as I work in the port area. For how big my passion is, however, I never managed to go and visit one. I only went close and watched the outside while rushing for work or home, but the crew wasn’t there.

This time around I found out they were organizing tours of the ship, but the visit times were exactly matching my working shift, lunch break included. It was so sad. The ship was leaving in a couple of days and once again I wouldn’t manage to visit it.

However, one of my colleagues that very day announced that in her partner’s office were organizing a guided tour for the Vespucci. If she wanted she could join with a couple of people more.

Needless to say that I secured a place with her, starting immediately my giggling spell that lasted the whole day! I must have looked like a frigging idiot! Or a lunatic, you pick! The truth was only one: this was a dream becoming true!

I was getting on board! I couldn’t believe it!!!

I know that I might seem a bit nut or weird, but to me, boarding, although for a few minutes, on a sailing ship was one of the best things I’ve ever done.

All my attention was concentrate on the ship and the bits and pieces that built up together form that marvel.

I barely noticed the officials, the cadets and the Capitan unless they were saying something interesting about the ship and its parts.

I asked this official, I actually don’t know the name of, many question about which one were the shrouds, details about the sails and speed in knots and the relation in between the two of them.

I found all these extremely fascinating and interesting.

Also I realized, with a pinch of sadness, that I made a huge mistake.

I don’t know if I told you already, the very first book I wrote was in Italian and it was about pirates – of course! – and ships. During the trip and the explanation on the Vespucci, I understood that some elements, crew number and basic navigation technique and details in my story were completely wrong.

I felt both bad and excited. Bad because, if I had the arrogance of editing and sending to an editor, I might have been mistaken for one cheater author who writes about specific stuff without having enough knowledge about it.

On the other hand, also I felt excited because I could confirm that I can learn more, that there are so many things I don’t know yet.

It’s something really amazing.

Vespucci 3

Once again I want to thank so much Nicole and her partner for giving me this fantastic opportunity; and you, my dear readers, for reading until the end this post full of nonsense for any other person but me!

I hope, anyway, you will enjoy some of the pictures.

Do you have anything you like so much that makes you lose the control? That you love so much that you cannot regain the said control although you’re struggling hard in the attempt?

Let me know in the comments below!

And of course, in case you know any website where to read and learn all about ships and pirates, please, I beg you, write it here for me!

Q as Quantity

Google search.

Once again I’m in late in publishing the posts for this challenge. I believe I will be able to beat a record this time, but for no reason I’ll stop participating. So today if my calculations are correct I’ll have to post three letters in order to catch up. But more likely I’ll publish one or two!

I have so many things to do and so many things I’m worried about that I had hardly the mindset to update the blog.

So let’s go back to the Q!

Quantity is a nice topic and most of all, one of the many obsessions I have.

If there is something I got to understand from this year challenge is that I have so many obsessions that I start to feel ashamed!

Said that and taken into account the fact that I’ll have to accept myself as I am before I’ll go mad, let’s go back to the post!

Does the quantity count? Is it better quantity or quality?

In particular after changing job, I realized that this is a real tough question to reply to and that also doesn’t apply only to writing, although, of course, writing is my main issue here!

Once again it seems that every series or every project implies a different number.

I started with a stand alone book, then I was planning a five book series that I put in stand by; for the following project I jotted down fifteen plots, and for the current WIP I decided that it should balance with nine.

How many book will I write? I don’t know, the main reply could be: finish one by one and let’s count at the end. A plot is a plot after all anyway, so it seems that the real main issue here is understanding why I cannot finish a single project once I’ve started. But this is not the right place where to understand the reasoning behind the action!

This is probably linked to a fear I’ve always had.

Would I be able to write one book after the other?

It is clear that at least I’m well able to plan them, so what would stop me to write them all, a part from my stupidity?

And because I’m a bit mean…but just a bit and just with me, the question I ask at all the times is: all right, you’ve plotted them, but will you manage to have other ideas afterwards?

I have no clue, but the fact that I asked this question to myself every single time I finished plotting each and every of the projects I mentioned above, makes me think that I will be able all right.

However, in this field is almost impossible to be certain of things. I guess I’ll have just to wait then.

What would you say about this topic?

I’m very, very curious to know your opinion about it.

Is quality better over quantity? Are they both important?

Do you question yourself at all the times?

P as Planning

20160412_130827

I’ll recycle this picture of my faithful notebook!

P was supposed to be associated with Persefone, my other MC, but for the same reason I decided to change the letter M, here you have another topic.

P now stands for planning as it’s becoming fast a bit of obsession for me.

When I go and attend a workshop, I know already that the writer running it will tell us that every writer finds his or her own way of writing. Sooner or later they all say it!

I think they are absolutely right, but I also think that every writer should experiment different kind of organization before writing their book.

I tried both, not to plan at all and plan almost everything before deciding what was working for me!

The very first book I wrote – and I’m talking about drafts in this post as I haven’t published anything yet unfortunately- was written out of excitement after finishing Stephen King’s On Writing.

I didn’t plan, I got an idea and I started writing. This first book was about pirates and, a part for a few details and technical terms I researched on the go, I wrote without thinking much.

The pro was I wrote completely free of plans or rules, but, on the other hand, I had to reread a few pieces here and there and start taking notes of characters features or deeds as I didn’t remember what I wrote.

After attending my famous first workshop with Oisín McGann a few months later, I learned that I could try another method.

I could plan!

And the more I plan the more I want to, as I feel very comfortable in doing it. As Oisín told us, he plans because in doing so he has more control on the story itself and there is a bit less rewriting afterwards.

I totally agree with his style. Alright, you know that I basically agree with whatever he says, but it’s true, either I have a similar style –I wish actually I could be only half as good as he is- or it’s a nice coincidence!

Having tried both methods I can say that planning is my thing. The more I write and the more I want and I need to plan.

That’s maybe why it’s so difficult to start this new WIP. Because of the huge amount of research needed I haven’t had the time to plan properly.

But I’ll keep going as I love doing it, it relaxes me and hopefully sooner or later I’ll manage to reach my goal and my dream.

How about you?

Do you plan? Don’t you plan at all? Are you a bit in between?
